Penang Bridge | Longest Bridge in Asia
Penang Bridge in Malay word called "Jabatan Pulau Pinang". Penang Bridge was designed by Tan Sri Datuk Professor Ir. Chin Fung Kee (Penang Resident). Datuk Chin is a well known former acting Vice Chancellor of University of Malaya and he is specialize in Geotechnical Engineering.
Penang bridge was start build in year 1982 and completed in year 1985. The total of the bridges is 13.5km (8.4 miles). At present, Penang Bridges is the 6th longest bridges in world. Penang Bridge is officially opening by 4th Prime Minister Daro Seri Dr Mahathir Mohammad on 31 August 1985. Traffic operation started on 14 September 1985.
The dual-carriageway bridge is connecting Penang Island and Penang Mainland. It has 6 lanes and daily handles about 65,000 vehicles and more than 70,000 people is using the bridge. This becomes a symbol of pride and national landmarks to Malaysia.
